As the main attraction in the parks New York City backlot, Kongfrontation opened as one of the original attractions at Universal Studios Florida on June 7th 1990. It was based on The King Kong Encounter, a previous attraction on the long running Studio Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood. From 1990 - 2002, the attraction was considered the crown jewel of the Florida Park.

While the attraction drew several crowds, it had a unreliable track record due to the complex special effects involved. By 1994, Universal engineers attempted several times to improve reliability, which ultimately required removing functionality in the King Kong animatronics by limiting their movements and some of the background effects. Due to maintenance issues, high staffing and the cost of repairs and advanced theme park technology, Kongfrontation officially closed on September 8th 2002 and was replaced by the Revenge Of The Mummy roller coaster in 2004.

And what of the King Kong animatronics themselves? Sadly, the two Kong’s used in the attraction were recycled for future attractions, although false rumors suggested that one of them was torn apart and pieces were being sold on eBay. Another rumor was that one of the animatronic Kong heads was hidden in a crate under the launch pad of Revenge Of The Mummy. However the only reminisce of Kongfrontation in the soundstage are some of the buildings structure, the tram track that holds the stage in place and a 4 foot golden statue of Kong in the treasure room of Revenge Of The Mummy.

But rumors have floated for a few years that the Photo Op Bust of Kong is still out there somewhere. Its been speculated that the bust was put in a crate and rotted behind the Kongfrontation soundstage. However word of mouth have said some of the props from the ride are in a storage stages.

Originally released October 31st 2012, this remaster of the original video updates the quality and sound as well as reconstruct the ride as a 20 minute movie, from the queue to the pre show and even the iconic gift shop of Safari Outfitters.
